On the Understanding of the Concept of Propagation Surfaces for Periodic Plates with Shunted Piezoelectric Patches

Abstract

The concept of propagation surfaces has been associated with two dimensional periodic structures since it was introduced more than 20 years ago. However, the physical interpretation of the surfaces has not been clarified in the vast amount of literature that used those surfaces to represent the characteristics of periodic plates. In this paper, an attempt is made to present the propagation surfaces from a different perspective through which a better understanding of their physical meaning could be achieved. Further, the propagation surfaces of a periodic plate with shunted piezoelectric patches bonded to its surface are used to emphasize this understanding and demonstrate the effect of the shunting circuit parameters on tuning the wave propagation filtering characteristics of the plate.
